What changes or forces caused the end of the Gothic era? This will be our topic of discussion for the last day of class on Tuesday, May 7. To prepare, please review the last chapter in Gimpel, “The End of a World.” Please also read the section on Flamboyant or Late Gothic in any medieval art history textbook. There are many in the library, and you may have one or several checked out for your term paper. Consider the following questions:

1. How did late Gothic or Flamboyant Gothic differ from Early or High Gothic art? Why did art develop in this way?

2. What might these changes in art suggest about changes in medieval civilization?

3. Why did the Gothic era end?
