Comerica Park

From 1896 to 1999, baseball was played in Detroit at the corner of Michigan and Trumbull. From 1912 to 1999, the Detroit Tigers played at the best baseball stadium in the major leagues, first known as Navin Field, then Briggs Stadium and finally Tiger Stadium. Another of my pages deals with Tiger Stadium.

This page is dedicated to the new baseball park in Detroit, known as Comerica Park (yes, it is named after a bank; that's the way it goes in baseball these days) (a.k.a. "The 'Co" or "CoPa". The new park has all the amenities the fans and players are supposed to want, but it has none of the charm of Tiger Stadium. Take a look at the pictures and see for yourself.

The game was in 2000, just as I was moving to Vermont after nineteen years in Miami, Florida. The Tigers were playing the Minnesota Twins and we were worried that rain would prevent the game.

Standing on the corner waiting to enter the ball park. The two guys in the middle are my cousins who traditionally go to the game with me.

A Tiger at Comerica Park

At the entrance to the ballpark are a couple of tigers that kids love.

Rear of the scoreboard

This is the scoreboard as seen from outside the ball park.

A view from right field

We entered the park and there was this view before us. This is the view from right field.

Tiger Hall of Famers

On the wall of the right field stands are the names of Detroit Tigers in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Number 42 represents Jackie Robinson of the Brooklyn Dodgers, whose number was retired by every major league team in 1997 to honor the 50th anniversary of his breaking of baseball's color line in 1947.

Al Kaline display

Throughout the concourses at Comerica Park the Tigers have set up displays of great teams and players from their past. This one honors one of the greatest Tigers of all: Al Kaline.

Detroit skyline from Comerica Park

A view of the Detroit skyline from the third base stands (our seats) at Comerica Park. Yes, it was a rainy day, but they played ball.

A view of the stands

Game time approaches. The field is drying out and we are about to begin. The Tigers hosted the Minnesota Twins on this day.

Left field wall

Along the left field stands the Tigers have erected statues of great Tiger players. Honored here are Willie Horton, Ty Cobb, Al Kaline, Charlie Gehringer, Hank Greenberg and Hal Newhouser.
