What is Shibboleth?

[1] SHIBBOLETH, a Hebrew word, meaning an ear of corn or a stream or river, from shbal, to grow, increase, flow, used by Jephthah, probably inthe second sense with reference to the river Jordan, as a test-word to identify the Ephraimites, who were unable to pronounce the sh (Judges 12:1-6) at the fords of the Jordan.

[2] Shibboleth, an internet2 architecture, policy framework, and practical technologies to support sharing of web resources and services. And to securely limit the resources to active members in good standing. Shibboleth's emphasis is on user privacy and control over information release. A privacy and security aware manager, perfect for allowing closed groups to interact on the Internet without interference from outsiders and former insiders. Developers include (but not limited to) IBM, Brown University, Carnegie Mellon University, Columbia University, and The Ohio State University.
