Narrative:

The sixteen-team bracket is divided into two eight-team divisions (A & B). The teams are numbered one through sixteen. Each team is labeled with a seed. Team one is the first seed. Team two is the sixteenth seed. At the discretion of the tournament director the seeds of teams three and eleven, five and thirteen, and seven and fifteen may be exchanged. For example such an exchange makes the fifth best team, team eleven and the sixth best team, team three.

Winning teams play in the first and every even numbered round. Teams with one loss play in every round following the loss.

Games ("G") are identified by division (the letters "A" and "B") and number. The notation of a game is placed in the round in which it occurs. G.B3 is game three (round one) in the "B" division. The winner of this game advances to the division "B" game six, G.B6, in round two. The loser takes the identity L.B3 (loser of division "B" game three) and advances to game G.B8, round two, in the second-chance bracket of division "B." A loser of a second-chance game is out of the double elimination tournament.

In round three, second-chance teams cross divisions to help avoid (or delay) rematches of earlier games.

In round six, the brackets collapse and the winner of the "A" division game G.A11, identified as W.A11, moves to play the winner in the "B" division, while the second-chance "B" team (the winner of G.B13, identified as L.B13) moves into the second-chance "A" bracket.

Room Scheduling

Schedule in a backward pattern. Schedule the final game first and the first games last. Imagine you have a champion and are playing the games backwards. Your final, semifinal, and quarter-final games should be the most exciting and have the largest audience. Schedule the best room for the final game. The first and second best rooms for the semifinal games. The first through fourth best rooms for the quarter-final games and so forth. Stop using the small, inaccessible, inappropriate, or inhospitable rooms as soon as possible. Make allowances for pedestrian traffic, it can interfere with the tournament or the games.
